Roche India GCC: From Startup to Innovation Center of Excellence
The Roche India GCC (Global Capability Center) has undergone a remarkable journey from an acquired startup to a digital center of excellence that plays a key role in Roche’s global innovation ecosystem.
Starting as a startup
Roche India’s GCC originated as a San Francisco-based tech startup focused on healthcare software development. The company had an engineering team in Pune, India, and was making significant progress in its field. After the acquisition by Roche, the founding team continued to be involved and contribute to the growth of the center in India.
Transforming into an innovation hub
In late 2020, the leaders of the former startup proposed to Roche that instead of focusing solely on the acquired products, they should scale up their operations into a full-fledged innovation hub. This would enable the GCC to not only play a supporting role but also become a hub for driving key digital initiatives.
According to Raja Jamalamadaka, managing director of Roche’s Digital Excellence Center in India, the GCC is now not just a cost solution but also a true source of innovation. With 515 employees, the center focuses on developing advanced digital solutions for Roche’s various businesses, including Roche Information Solutions, Roche Diagnostics R&D, Informatics and Diabetes Care Digital Engineering.
Team and Technical Capabilities
Starting with around 35 employees from a startup, Roche India GCC today has a team of highly skilled technology professionals, including software engineers, developers, development architects, UI designers, data scientists and data analytics engineers. These professionals are working to develop digital platforms and solutions that support healthcare operations, helping Roche continue to maintain its leadership position in the healthcare space.
The Future of Roche India GCC
GCC’s growth in India is a testament to how Roche is investing in digital innovation, not only in its traditional markets but also in regions with high potential like India. The transformation from a startup to a global competence center reflects Roche’s long-term vision of combining technology and healthcare to deliver the best value to patients around the world.
