There’s a Little Bit of India in Every Mercedes Around the World

As technology plays an increasingly important role in the automotive industry, Mercedes-Benz’s research and development (R&D) unit in India has emerged as an integral part of the German automaker’s global strategy. According to Manu Saale, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz R&D India (MBRDI), the centre’s role will only grow in the future.

MBRDI – The Largest Research Centre Outside Germany

Mercedes-Benz operates the Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI), the largest R&D facility of Mercedes-Benz Group AG outside Germany. Established in 1996, MBRDI initially focused on logistics support when Mercedes-Benz first entered the Indian market. However, over time, the centre has evolved into a comprehensive research and development facility, currently employing over 9,000 people.

MBRDI’s focus is on research and development of new automotive technologies, including connected vehicles, autonomous vehicles and electric vehicles. It is also involved in product design and development, computational engineering, electrical and electronics development, chassis, driver assistance systems and telematics.

The importance of Indian R&D for Mercedes-Benz

The evolution of the automotive industry is changing the way automakers approach technology. Cars today are not just means of transportation but also intelligent machines equipped with advanced technologies. This makes Mercedes-Benz India’s R&D unit an important part of the company’s global strategy.

The rise of smart features in cars, from autonomous driving to internet connectivity and electrification technologies, requires a large number of research and development personnel. MBRDI has become an important center for the development and deployment of these technologies, helping Mercedes-Benz maintain its leadership position in the automotive industry.

India – A Growing Market for Mercedes-Benz

Although Mercedes-Benz sells more than two million vehicles a year globally, its market share in India remains relatively small. However, the country is rapidly becoming an important market. Currently, India is the fifth largest market for Mercedes-Benz in the Asia-Pacific region, and is expected to rise to third place, surpassing Turkey and Australia. This reflects the strong growth of the middle and upper classes in India, thanks to the country's rapid economic growth.

Mercedes-Benz’s expansion in India is not only reflected in sales but also in its heavy investment in research and development. With MBRDI playing a key role, India is not only a consumer market but also a strategic technology hub for the German automaker.

Conclusion

India’s presence in the global automotive industry is growing. For Mercedes-Benz, MBRDI not only helps it develop cutting-edge technology but also plays a vital role in maintaining its leadership position in the industry. As Manu Saale has emphasized, “There is a little bit of India in every Mercedes in the world,” and that will continue to grow in the future.
